DTR, John Deere, American Greetings
Receive State Workplace Safety Award
Three local companies have been chosen to receive a top state award, the Commissioner's Award of Excellence for Workplace Safety and Health.
Honored at the closing session of the recent Tennessee Safety and Health Congress in Nashville were DTR Tennessee, American Greetings and John Deere Power Products.
The awards were presented by Burns Phillips, Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner.
The companies "demonstrated strong commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace," Phillips said in a news release.
"The evaluation criteria for this award are not only challenging, but are designed to stimulate interest in accident prevention and to promote safety," Phillips said.
The Commissioner's Award of Excellence honors Tennessee employers and employees who meet a required number of hours without workplace injuries serious enough to cause an employee to miss a day of work.
The number of hours required is based on the size of the company.
American Greetings, in Afton, manufactures coated and laminated packaging paper.
The facility employs 520 people and qualified for the award by having an injury-free record dating back to November 2011.
John Deere Power Products, off Hal Henard Road, manufactures lawn tractors and garden equipment.
The facility employs 581 people and qualified for the award by having an injury-free record dating back to August 2010.
DTR Tennessee, in Midway, manufactures rubber products used primarily in the production of automobiles.
The facility employs 759 people and qualified for the award by working 1 million hours without a lost-time injury for the year 2012.
DTR's Midway facility in June also received the Volunteer Star Safety Award.
The Volunteer Star award is the state's highest honor for workplace safety and health and is a nationally recognized program.
The Volunteer Star is patterned after the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) and recognizes the best of the best in the area of safety and health programming and performance.
