The new store, which is at 831 E. Andrew Johnson Hwy., is located in the remodeled and refurbished building that formerly housed a Winn-Dixie supermarket.
The new 31,546-sq.-ft. store is several times larger than the present Dollar General store located nearby in the Greeneville Square Shopping Center.
The smaller Dollar General store will be closed.
About 40 percent of the new store will be devoted to fresh produce, frozen meats,
dairy products and other grocery items, said Bill Patton, Dollar General's district manager.
Chris Treadway is the new store's manager, having been transferred from a Dollar General store in Kingsport.
Treadway said he expects the new store to have about 45 employees.
It will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.
Patton and Treadway said the new store will have a "soft opening" with no fanfare this Saturday. Many of the store's shelves are stocked now. Patton said the rest will be fully stocked by Saturday's opening.
Aug. 13 'Grand Opening'
A "grand opening' is scheduled to begin on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 8 a.m. and run through the following day. The event will include free product samples and sweepstakes drawings.
Patton said that the new Greeneville store will be about the company's 28th Dollar General Market. Such "market" stores are larger than typical Dollar General stores and include a supermarket as well as all the other goods Dollar General sells.
The company said in a press release that the new Dollar General Market will be "a general merchandise store with a large selection of refrigerated and frozen items including dairy products, produce, meats and other perishable foods.
"In addition, the store will carry a selection of dry goods such as canned and packaged items, snacks, beverages, bakery products and more."
Kathleen Guion, Dollar General's executive vice president, said, "We've chosen
Greeneville for a Dollar General Market to build upon our mission of serving this community. This new market concept brings even more of the products that our neighbors need every day at value prices, all together in one convenient location.
"We think our customers will be excited to find this selection of grocery items in addition to all the traditional Dollar General items."
The new store has 10 times more cooler space than does a typical Dollar General Store.
With a new design, having been repainted and having new lighting, the Dollar General Market has a bright, attractive appearance. The new store has wider aisles than do smaller Dollar General stores.
Remodeling work on the building started on May 9. It was done by Rhino Construction, of Milan, Tenn., and by SMS Construction, of Cincinnati.
