JOHNSON CITY -- The Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) at East Tennessee State University will offer potential entrepreneurs several training classes in July.
The classes are open to the public and will be held at the ETSU Innovation Laboratory, 2109 W. Market St.
On Tuesday, July 9, "Social Media for Small Business" will meet from 9 a.m. to noon.
Topics in this introductory class include the top five social media sites and how to use them, as well as ways to develop a social media strategy for an individual business. There is a $20 fee for this class.
"So You Want to Start a Business" will be offered on Thursday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to noon.
The free class covers the ways TSBDC can assist entrepreneurs and addresses preparation for the loan process, licensing requirements, and how to assess the market.
"Writing Your Business Plan" will be held on Tuesday, July 16, from 9 a.m. to noon.
The workshop covers the components of a business plan, exercises to assist with the first steps, and information about free personal coaching. There is a $20 fee.
The "SBA Borrower's Workshop" on Thursday, July 18, from 9 to 11 a.m., covers Small Business Administration (SBA) loan options, including which loan program meets a specific entrepreneurial need. The session encompasses the "5 Cs" of credit -- character, cash flow, collateral, capitalization and conditions -- in addition to an overview of all SBA loan programs.
Also on Thursday, July 18, "Pinterest for Small Businesses" will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.
Class content will include an overview of the Pinterest photo-sharing website, establishing a presence through Pinterest, what types of content to share, pairing the content with a website or blog, how to conduct a promotion and how to measure results.
"Research for Business Planning" on Tuesday, July 23, from 9 a.m. to noon will include a discussion of different methods of research and primary versus secondary data.
Agencies, including the U.S. Census Bureau and Tennessee Department of Revenue, that provide data used by attendees planning the expansion or start-up of a business, will be identified. Fee-based resources offered to TSBDC clients will be discussed, such as ProfitCents, a financial analysis program that will provide clients with a written financial analysis along with recommendations for corrective action.
Reference USA, a marketing tool to identify prospective customers and competitors, will be explained. The $10 fee for this workshop includes handouts and a CD with links to data sources.
