Both drivers were injured in a grinding head-on crash between two cars about 8 a.m. today in front of 1912 W. Main St.
One of the drivers suffered what authorities said were serious injuries and was taken by Greene County-Greeneville EMS to Johnson City Medical Center. The other was taken to Takoma Regional Hospital.
The drivers were alone in their cars. The names of the crash victims were not available this morning.
Tammy Shelton was behind a maroon Scion involved in the crash.
The Scion was southbound, heading out of Greeneville. Shelton said a white car was coming up West Main Street toward Greeneville.
"The white car was over on (the other driver's) side. He was across the yellow line and they hit head-on," she said.
The driver of the white, older-model Buick was able to exit the smoking car on his own, Shelton said.
The front driver's side wheel of the Scion was sheared off by the impact of the crash. The driver of that car appeared to have serious injuries.
"The only thing he said was, 'Help me,' and he passed out. We tried to keep him awake," Shelton said.
The crash happened about five lots down West Main Street from Pelican Lane. Traffic was diverted on Pelican Lane around to Fann Drive while the wreck scene was cleared.
Greeneville police and firefighters were also on scene. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is assisting in the investigation.
