Sheriff's deputies are investigating the theft of about $30,000 between Dec. 20 and Thursday from a house on Choctaw Drive, in the Chuckey community, Deputy Toby Price said in a report.
The victim told deputies that, on Thursday, one of his tenants came over to pay rent.
The tenant went into the homeowner's office and was supposed to put some money in a cash bag. The victim told deputies that $2,000 was already in the bag, and he found it empty, the report said.
The victim owns various properties and said the last time he saw the cash was on Jan. 1, when other tenants were paying their rent, the report said.
The victim then checked a gun safe and found it had been opened. A cash bag containing $29,000 that was inside a smaller safe was missing, the report said.
Old coins, a gold necklace, gold rings and $4,000 in cash were left inside the safe, as were an assortment of guns, the report said.
"The victim states he knew the money was there right before Christmas," the report said.
Only two people knew where the keys to the larger safe were hidden, the report said.
A possible male suspect is named in the report.
