Phillip Dean Hale Jr., 35, of 330 E. Church St., was charged Monday in connection with assault on three corrections officers at the Greene County Detention Center, or jail, reports said.
As Hale was being escorted to the basement level of the detention center, he "became aggressive" and kicked a door, shoved an officer in the chest and then took three swings at the officer, "connecting three times to the top of [the officer's] head," a report by Officer Shawn Holt said.
Hale allegedly spit on Holt and two officers responding to aid him, reports said.
Hale has been in custody at the jail since June 2012 and was being taken to another part of the facility when the incident occurred, officials said.
He was initially taken into custody following a home invasion crime on Twin Barns Road, sheriff's deputies said.
Hale was charged with three counts of assault on an officer in connection with the incident on Monday. His first scheduled court appearance was on Wednesday.
He is held in the Greene County on a number of charges, including aggravated burglary, two counts of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, three counts of assault, theft under $500, and one count of aggravated sexual battery, a jail official said.
The aggravated sexual battery and other offenses stem from an alleged incident that occurred last June in the Detention Center, deputies said.
