A Jonesborough man charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection with the shooting early Thursday of a Chuckey man was scheduled to appear this morning in Washington County General Sessions Court.
Charged with attempted murder and other felony offenses is Freddie Mitchell Lewis, 33, of 612 Old State Route 34.
The victim is Reed Allen Baker, 43, of 342 Old Stockton Road, of Chuckey. Baker lives in Washington County near the Greene County border.
Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal said in a news release that between 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and 12:15 a.m. Thursday, Lewis -- also known as "Rooster" -- entered Baker's house "and assaulted the victim with a club."
Baker was able to fend off the assault and Lewis left, Graybeal said.
About 12:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the news release, Baker was in a friend's driveway at 174 Mae McKee Road, and Lewis returned in a Dodge Ram pickup truck.
"The suspect exited the vehicle and shot the victim in the head with a shotgun, then left via the vehicle, but after a couple minutes returned, shooting the victim a second time," Graybeal said.
Baker was flown by Wings Air Rescue to Johnson City Medical Center.
His condition was not known this morning.
"We can't confirm that he's there," hospital spokeswoman Teresa Hicks said Thursday.
Lewis turned himself in Thursday to Washington County authorities. He is also charged with aggravated assault, possessing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated burglary and felony reckless endangerment.
Bond was set at $250,000.
