An autopsy has been ordered following the death of a Newport Highway man during the weekend.
Craig William Odum, 40, of 3740 Newport Hwy., was pronounced dead shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Odum died at the home of Daniel Scott Gregg, age 28, of 109 Leming St.
Gregg and two other individuals in the home, Matthew Quillen and Dianne Wills, of the same address, provided statements to the Greeneville Police Department.
Officer David Shell's report indicates Odum arrived at the home around midnight Saturday, apparently under the influence of a substance and in need of a place to stay for the night.
Gregg, Quillen, and Wills all reported that Odum had to be assisted into bed. It was also reported that Odum was in possession of a safe containing his medications.
Gregg reported that he went into the room where Odum was sleeping to wake him up at approximately 8:20 a.m.
Odum was unresponsive at that time. Gregg attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and contacted emergency personnel.
A unit from the Greeneville Fire Department was first on the scene.
Odum was pronounced dead at 8:31 a.m.
His body and medications found in his safe were taken for autopsy.
