Black History Month Celebration Brings Out Big Crowd

Sun photo by O.J. Early

Youth perform a reenactment of the now-famous Rosa Parks story. In this photo of the reenactment, an actress portraying the late Mrs. Parks is shown at far left entering a public bus in Montgomery, Ala., in 1955. Her refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger when directed by the bus driver to do so led to her arrest. The arrest, in turn, led to a months-long boycott of the bus system by the city’s African-American community that ended segregation on the bus system and eventually had far-reaching impact on the desegregation of public facilities throughout the country.
