Motorists are urged to use extreme caution along the Horton Highway, near the Washington County line, where pavement has begun to crack as the ground beneath the roadway is giving way in the 17300 block, according to Greene County Road Superintendent David Weems.
Weems said the Greene County Highway Department has utilized cones and flashing lights to block one lane along the dangerous shoulder.
Repairs are scheduled to begin today, although freezing temperatures may delay the work, Weems cautioned.
This is the third such incident in recent days following last week's steady rains that softened the ground throughout Greene County.
Kiser Boulevard and Green Mountain Road experienced damage to the pavement last week as runoff waters washed away large sections of ground beneath the roadways.
