Central Baptist Church, located on Bobbie Avenue off the Newport Highway, will mark its 50th anniversary with celebration services Nov. 17-24.
Services on Nov. 17 begin at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Weeknight services begin at 7. Services on Nov. 24 begin at 10:30 a.m.
"There will be a special guest speaker at each service," a church press release said. Everyone's invited.
The church provided this summary of the history of the church over the previous five decades:
"In 1963, God showed Dr. Bill Hall the need for an independent Baptist church in Greeneville.
"Although Dr. Hall was in evangelism, he felt called of the Lord to begin Central Baptist Church.
"The first services took place on Nov. 17, 1963, and early meetings were held in the Farm Bureau building.
"As the church began to grow, the Lord blessed us with our current property at 100 Bobbie Avenue, and in 1967 our original building was completed.
"In 1967 Dr. Hall went back into evangelism, and Brother Bob Taylor took over the pastorate of the church.
"Under Pastor Taylor, Greeneville Christian Academy was founded and went on to provide Christian education to those in the area until 1989.
"Our current pastor, Todd Abbey, has been at Central Baptist Church since 1994.
"He took over the position of Senior Pastor in 2002.
"While many of the people, buildings and numerous other things have changed since 1963, one thing remains the same: Central Baptist Church still unashamedly stands for the Word of God, without compromise."
