The Newport Highway (U.S. 321) was blocked this morning between DeBusk and Warrensburg roads as firefighters cleaned up at the scene of a house fire at 3850 Newport Hwy.
The house was heavily damaged by the fire. No injuries were reported.
Volunteers from the DeBusk, Orebank and Caney Branch volunteer fire departments fought the fire in this morning's bitterly-cold weather.
Also on the scene was Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services.
Officers from the Greene County Sheriff's Department were detouring traffic off the Newport Highway to Warrensburg and DeBusk roads.
The fire was called in at 6:53 a.m. The cause remains under investigation.
Ryan Holt, chief of the Greene County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments and former Caney Branch VFD chief, said the extreme cold hindered efforts of firefighters.
Two fire trucks malfunctioned at the scene, and water pumps froze on one of the trucks, Holt said.
Firefighters were still at the scene at 9 a.m.
