The Greene County Commission on Monday formally accepted County Board of Education member Roger Jones' resignation, effective this Thursday.
Jones, who had been elected chairman by his fellow board members for the past three years, has represented the 7th School Board District, which includes the Orebank, Mt. Pleasant, Highland Roby, High School, Andrew Johnson and Glenwood precincts.
County Mayor Alan Broyles announced the vacancy and said the county will advertise the qualifications for the opening in the 7th School Board District in Friday's issue of The Greeneville Sun.
Interested candidates will have two weeks to submit their resume to Broyles' office at the County Annex on Cutler Street.
In turn, Broyles will transfer the applications to Greene County Administrator of Elections Donna Burgner to determine whether the various candidates meet the qualifications for the school board position.
Those qualifications include proof of high school graduation or GED, and residency within the 7th School Board District.
Broyles said he will provide the commissioners with copies of the qualifying applicants' resumes at least five days before the November meeting.
During that meeting the commission will vote to appoint a member to fill the open seat on the school board until the next election.
