County School Board Approves Bid For Sludge Collector At SGHS

Members of the Greene County Board of Education met briefly Monday afternoon to consider approval of a bid award for a sludge collector at South Greene High School.

The meeting began at 4:30 p.m. in the library at Chuckey-Doak High School.

Greene County Director of Schools Dr. Vicki Kirk explained that, at the beginning of the summer break last year, bids were sought for the sludge collector.

But, she said, the bids showed the project's cost to be "significantly higher than anticipated."

Kirk said that action on the project was put on hold, as funds in the capital budget for such a project were not sufficient.

"We have come in under [budget] on several projects, and we were able to put enough together to be able to fund this project," she said.

"I'm very pleased about that. It's something that's been of great concern to me," Kirk added.

Cathy Walden, engineer and president of W&W Engineering, was present to answer any questions about the bid for a sludge collector at South Greene High School.

Walden said that the project would need to be done when the school is not in use, as the wastewater collection tank will need to be emptied before work can begin.

"It really needs to be done when school is out of session or over a long holiday," she said, because the more water used, the more that will have to be pumped.

Because of the amount of time needed for materials for the project to arrive, the project would likely to be undertaken during the winter break in December.

Walden spent a few minutes reviewing with board members two bids received for the project.

A base bid of $65,000 was awarded to Carter Contractors, LLC.

Walden said that the cost of the project, however, could be less.

Some parts and components included in the $65,000 figure may not require replacement, she said. Such a determination, however, cannot be made until the basin is drained.

The vote for the bid award was unanimous, with Chairman Roger Jones and board member Kathy Austin not present.

The bid was the only item of business on the board's agenda.

The next meeting of the Greene County Board of Education is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 22, at 5 p.m. at the Greene County School System Central Office.
