Domestic Assault Charged After Reported Kidnapping

Joshua Ryan Smith, 22, of 53 Snapps Ferry Park, was charged Tuesday night with domestic assault and driving on a revoked license-second offense after Greeneville police officers responded to a reported kidnapping at the Burger King on East Andrew Johnson Highway.

Witnesses told police that a man "grabbed the victim by the hair and dragged her to a green van and threw her into the vehicle and left the scene," Officer Nicholas Fillers said in a report.

A van matching the description was pulled over a short time later on East Andrew Johnson Highway. Smith was driving, Officer Fillers said in his report.

A records check showed that the van was registered to the alleged victim and that Smith's driver license was revoked in connection with a previous driving-while-suspended charge, the report said.

Witnesses told officers that Smith had dropped the victim off in the Burger King parking lot and returned a short time later and allegedly forced her inside the van.

Smith was held on no bond pending a first scheduled General Sessions Court appearance today.
