Main Street: Greeneville has announced the fourth annual "Scarecrows of Main" competition to be held in downtown Greeneville.
A news release says that entries are not being limited to only those within the display area.
Entries must, however, come from within Greene County or be a current 2013-14 member of Main Street: Greeneville, the release said.
This contest is open to all ages -- individuals, families, groups, clubs and businesses.
Each person, family or group may only enter one time.
There are four categories: residential, group/organization, business and youth.
The display area will include the 12-block downtown area known as the Main Street District, along with Main Street from the U.S. 11E Bypass to the Crescent School Building.
Entries from outside the display area will be assigned a location within the area where they may place their scarecrow.
"Let your imagination run wild as you create that scarecrow you have always wanted to make," said Main Street Director Jann Mirkov.
"Could it be that we will see a straw ballerina, lawyer, shopkeeper, etc. hanging out in downtown for the next couple of weeks?" she asked in a news release.
Scarecrows should be family friendly -- whimsical, humorous, mischievous, but not frightening.
There is no entry fee.
Pre-registration is required at the Main Street office, at 310 S. Main St., beginning Monday, Sept. 23, and going through Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Display locations will be assigned and confirmed at time of registration.
Those who do not reside in the display area or have a business there are also encouraged to enter the contest, as limited additional display space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Only those registered will be eligible for judging.
Contest rules, district boundaries and entry forms are available now at the Main Street: Greeneville office or online at http://www.mainstreetgreeneville.org home under "Announcements -- Fourth Annual Scarecrows of Main Contest."
All entries must be in place by 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
All entries will be on public display Oct. 8 through Nov. 4.
More information regarding scarecrow locations will be announced prior to judging, the news release said.
The public is asked to vote for their favorite scarecrow.
Voting will be Tuesday, Oct. 8, through Sunday, Oct. 20 via email to: (email@example.com)
Winners will be notified prior to Halloween Happenings, on Thursday Oct. 31, and prizes/certificates will be awarded.
Winning entries will be marked and identified.
