The body of a Roan Mountain fisherman reported missing after an apparent collision with an island on Watauga Lake just upstream from Fish Springs Marina was recovered Sunday night, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA).
A TWRA news release said that the victim's body was located at about 5:10 p.m. in Watauga Lake by an underwater remotely-operated vehicle. The body was found by members of the Carter County Rescue Squad.
The man's identity was being withheld as of this morning.
TWRA officers were notified Sunday morning about an unoccupied bass boat that was found by a fisherman about 10 a.m.
A witness in a nearby sailboat reported noticing the unoccupied bass boat in the same area about 10 p.m. Saturday and said that the vessel was displaying its navigation lights.
The missing fisherman apparently launched his boat Saturday at Rat Branch boat ramp, several miles downstream from the accident scene.
Officers located the truck and empty trailer and notified the missing person's family, who informed them that he suffers from several medical conditions.
Members of the Carter County Rescue Squad using underwater remotely-operated vehicles were assisted by TWRA officers with sonar units, according to the news release.
