Greeneville police are investigating instances of alleged embezzlement by a former employee of H&R Block.
A Limestone man reported Monday that an ex-employee of the tax preparation service "had fraudulently taken out a loan in his name," Officer Eric Scott said in a report.
After the suspect took out the loan, she called the victim and told him she had taken out a $500 loan, "but not to worry about it because she was going to take care of it," the report said.
When the victim went to have his taxes done several months later, he "was told there was an outstanding loan that needed to be taken care of," the report said.
When the victim told H&R Block that he didn't take out the loan, company employees accompanied him to the Greeneville Police Department to file a report.
A current employee told police the suspect "had also taken out fraudulent loans in the names of at least four other people which had not yet been reported."
A suspect is named in the report.
An H&R Block district manager said Tuesday that the employee was fired as soon as the allegations became known, and the tax preparation company is conducting an internal investigation.
"Those clients that this unfortunate thing happened to will not be liable for those loans," H&R Block District Manager Angela Bible said. "Our company is taking legal action against this individual. We do not take it lightly."
H&R clients "will not be affected in any way," Bible said.
"Our main concern is taking care of the clients, and they will not be liable at all," she said.
