Grand Jury Indictments Heavy On Drug Charges

The illegal sale and use of prescription medications is the cause of most crime in the area, keeping members of the Third Judicial District Drug Task Force constantly busy, Greene County Sheriff Steve Burns said Tuesday.

Twelve individuals charged with drug-related offenses who were indicted last week by a Greene County grand jury will appear today in Greene County General Sessions Court for arraignment.

They are just the tip of the iceberg, the sheriff said.

One way or another, prescription drug abuse factors into most thefts and crimes committed in Greene County, Burns said.

"Not just the sale of these prescription drugs -- the abuse of them [and] the addiction to them contribute to the majority of the cases we deal with every day," he said.

"Members of the drug task force may face an uphill battle, but they remain committed to putting a dent in the drug trade here," Burns said.

"We just continue to make these cases, and we're working as hard as we can to do something about this problem."

Burns wants to send a message to those who think they can make a quick buck by selling prescription medications and other illegal drug activity in Greene County.

"We want them to think that the next knock on the door may be us," he said.

Most of the defendants are charged with Sale/Delivery of a Schedule II Controlled Substance. Schedule II drugs include Oxycodone and related substances, and cocaine.

Individuals to be arraigned today include:

* Nathan Lance Allen, 26, of Wise, Va., charged Sept. 2 with Sale/Delivery of a Schedule II Controlled Substance.

* Tim Douglass Casteel, 51, of 1770 Cox Hill Road, charged Sept. 2 with Sale/Delivery of a Schedule II Controlled Substance.
