Greene County's unemployment rate continued to head in the right direction in September, dipping down to 10.8 percent, but then ticked back up to 11.0 percent, according to numbers released by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development on Wednesday.

The county's jobless rate was 11.1 percent in August and 11.5 percent in July.

The state released both September's and October's numbers together on Wednesday.

Normally those reports are released on the fourth Thursday of each month, but the federal government's partial shutdown in October delayed the release of data that states use to calculate their unemployment information, according to the department.

The Tennessee unemployment rate was 8.4 percent for both September and October, down slightly from August's 8.5 percent.

The U.S. unemployment rate was 7.2 percent in September and rose slightly to 7.3 percent in October. It had been at 7.3 percent in August.

Most of the seven neighboring counties monitored closely each month by The Greeneville Sun saw their jobless rates stay the same or decrease in September, and four of the seven had rates decrease slightly in October.

Greene County continues to have the highest unemployment rate among its neighbors.

Of Tennesee's 95 counties for October, unemployment increased in 64 counties, decreased in 18 counties and remained unchanged in 13 counties.

The latest monthly report from the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development shows Greene County with 25,120 persons employed in October, and 3,110 unemployed, in a total labor force of 28,230.
