The Greene County Election Commission has announced that Andrew "Andy" Hillyer, of Bird Circle, Greeneville, has filed a petition to run for election in the 8th County Commissioner District.

Hillyer has served for several years as aquatics director at Kinser Park and is a director of the Greene County Firewood Ministry.

The position became vacant with the death of Commissioner Brenda Grogan on Aug. 6 following a recent illness.

Hillyer filed the petition on Monday.

Others who have filed are former County Commissioner Bill Dabbs, Phil Gentry, and Russell Johnson.

The election to fill Grogan's unexpired term will take place on Nov. 6 in connection with the state and federal General Election on that date.

The commissioner term expires at the end of August 2014.

The deadline for filing petitions to run for the 8th District seat is noon on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
