Hurst, Pectol Named VPs At Walters State

Walters State Community College has named two new vice presidents.

A news release from the school says Dr. Mark A. Hurst has been appointed as vice president for College Advancement and treasurer of the Walters State Foundation.

J.B. Pectol was appointed vice president for Communications and Marketing.

Hurst joined Walters State in 1995 as a business analyst in human resources and the business office, and later moved to the Office of College Advancement.

His duties include serving as the treasurer of the Walters State Foundation, one of the largest community college foundations in the country with net assets over $15 million.

The foundation awards more than 200 scholarships each year and raises money for special needs at the college.

The department also provides alumni services to 23,000-plus Walters State alumni located all over the United States and in many foreign countries.

Hurst attended Walters State and earned a degree in business from the University of Tennessee.

He also holds a master's degree in business administration and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy analysis, both from East Tennessee State University.

Pectol has been with Walters State since 1992. He joined the college after working in journalism for several years.

His first position was as an adjunct faculty member, teaching developmental and basic writing courses.

In 1996, he was hired as a media specialist in the college's Office of Public Information -- now the Office of Communications and Marketing.

Pectol has held several positions within the Office of Communications and Marketing prior to being named vice president in July.

His responsibilities include internal and external communications, marketing, publications, community relations, public relations, media relations, photographic services, the institutional website and social media sites.

Pectol holds an associate's degree in English from Lees McRae College, a bachelor's degree in English from Stetson University, and a master's degree in English from East Tennessee State University.
