A Greeneville man will appear today in General Sessions Court after allegedly causing a two-vehicle crash about 5:35 p.m. Thursday in a parking lot at 601 Asheville Highway, crashing into the nearby Wendy's Restaurant, and then fleeing the scene.
Joshua R. Smith, 21, of 53 Snapps Ferry Park, drove a Honda Accord "in a reckless manner in several city streets before being confronted by police and placed under arrest" at West McKee and South Irish streets, Greeneville police Officer Joe Prokop said in a report.
When officers approached Smith, he allegedly got out of the car and fled on foot. He was quickly taken into custody, the report said.
The parking lot crash on Asheville Highway injured a person who required hospital treatment, Prokop said. The name and condition of the victim was not available this morning.
Smith "was the sole occupant and driver when he struck another vehicle at a high rate of speed and then struck the restaurant building," the report said.
Smith "then left the scene after causing injury" and drove into the downtown area, the report said.
Prokop said this morning that a witness saw the parking lot crash and followed Smith's car. Police picked up the pursuit.
Once police "came in close proximity of the defendant while he was operating a motor vehicle at the intersection of West McKee and South Irish streets with lights and siren activated, the defendant exited the vehicle and ran from (Prokop) on foot," the report said.
Smith was "apprehended after a short foot pursuit," the report said.
His driver license was found to be suspended for failing to satisfy a citation in Greene County, the report said.
Smith was charged with a felony count of reckless endangerment, evading arrest and driving on a suspended license.
Bond for Smith was set at $12,000, pending his court appearance today.
