Man Charged With DUI Wednesday

William Joseph Betz, 53, of 617 Van Hill Road, was charged Wednesday with driving under the influence after sheriff's deputies responded to a call about a truck that had backed into a ditch in the 2300 block of Baileyton Road.

Betz was behind the wheel when deputies arrived, Deputy Mark Crum said in a report.

"(He) was attempting to back out of the business lot with (a) patrol car behind his vehicle," the report said.

Betz had an odor of alcohol and told deputies that he "had drank vodka and beer until he fell asleep earlier in the day," the report said.

Deputies also found a bottle of night-time cold medication Betz said he had earlier taken.

Bond for Betz was set at $1,000 pending a first scheduled General Sessions Court appearance on Friday.
