A man died when he was struck by a car about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday as he crossed the 1100 block of West Allens Bridge Road, Trooper Matt Blankenship, of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, said in a report.

Killed was George R. White, 76, of 1130 West Allens Bridge Road.

White had parked his car in his driveway and crossed the road to get mail.

He was walking back across the road and was struck in the westbound lane of traffic, the report said.

The driver of the 1996 Honda Accord sedan that struck White, 38-year-old Jennifer M. Morgan, of Greeneville, was not charged in connection with the accident.

"There was no evidence of speeding, alcohol, and it was extremely dark outside," the report said.

The posted speed limit on the road is 45 mph.

Greene County-Greeneville Emergency Medical Services, the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad and the South Greene Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.
