More Scams Reported;
Callers Falsely Claim Link To GL&PS

Greeneville Light & Power System (GL&PS) officials are reporting more cases of customers being victimized by telephone scams.

GL&PS General Manager Bill Carroll said Monday several customers have received calls from a telephone number with the area code 801.

The person who is calling claims to be from GL&PS and threatens to shut off power to the recipient if he or she doesn't make a credit card payment over the phone.

Area code 801 is associated with the Salt Lake City area.

"We do not do business that way at all," Carroll said. "It is purely a scam. We do not take credit card numbers over the phone."

Carroll said three GL&PS customers had reported the scam calls Monday.

GL&PS employees will sometimes make calls to account-holders who need to address a problem, but they never ask for a credit card payment over the phone, Carroll said.

Any calls coming from GL&PS will always come from the system's main number: 423-636-6200. "If anyone has a question, give us a call," Carroll said.

Other cities in the state have reported similar scams. And in November, Carroll reported a similar scam specifically targeting commercial customers.

Anyone with questions may contact GL&Ps by calling 636-6200.
