'Person Of Interest' In Stabbing Death Remains In Hospital

No charges had been formally filed as of this morning in connection with the fatal stabbing of Afton man Scotty Wayne Tilson, sheriff's Detective Lt. Jeffrey Morgan said.

A suspect remains hospitalized and is a "person of interest," Morgan said.

The suspect in the case was previously convicted of second-degree murder in a multiple stabbing death.

He remained hospitalized this morning in an area hospital for undisclosed medical reasons, Morgan said.

"We have officers sitting with him. Even though he is not under arrest, he is a person of interest," Morgan said.

At about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Tilson, of 95 Mary Lamons Road, called Greene County 911 and told a dispatcher that he had been stabbed.

When deputies arrived at the scene, Tilson was found "lying on a mattress in a bedroom with what appeared to be several stab wounds about his body," sheriff's Lt. Terry S. Rader's said in a report.

Tilson told Rader that he knew who had stabbed him, and later remembered the person's name, Rader said in the report.

Greene County-Greeneville EMS personnel treated Tilson at his Afton residence, but he later died from his injuries.

Investigators found a trail of blood that led down Tilson's driveway and on to Mary Lamons Road to a baseball bat, according to a report.

The bat was found about 100 feet from the house. Another blood trail stretched approximately 100 feet past the bat, the report said.

A funeral service for Tilson was held on Wednesday.
