Philip Morgan Jr., a Newport resident and farmer, has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for state representative in the 11th Tennessee House of Representatives District.
Under the new redistricting plan, the 11th District will include only a few precincts of western Greene County, substantially less than in recent years.
Morgan, of 119 Highway 411 in Cocke County, filed his petition with the Cocke County Election Commission in February.
The incumbent is Republican Jeremy Faison, of Cosby.
Born and raised in Cocke County, Morgan calls himself a "product of East Tennessee."
For the past 10 years, he has been a member of the Cocke County Water Advisory Council and chairman of the Cocke County Regional Planning Commission.
The state Republican and Democratic Party Primary Elections are on Aug. 2.
