Greeneville police responding to a shots-fired call about 8 p.m. on Friday at the Greeneville Terrace Apartments later charged a man with aggravated assault and felony possession of a Schedule II drug.
Quanardel Wells, 19, of 308 Park St., was also charged with other offenses.
Another man who allegedly fired the weapon is sought on warrants.
Twelve empty shell casings were found outside a building in the complex, police said.
An occupant of one apartment said she heard someone "beating at her door, then she heard the shots," a report said.
Children were inside the apartment, and the victim took them upstairs when she heard gunfire, the report said.
A possible suspect was mentioned by the occupant.
Investigation showed that when the victim would not open the door, 12 rounds were allegedly fired from a .40 caliber pistol.
Four slugs were found in the ground just over one foot from the apartment wall, a report said.
After the shots were fired, Wells and the other man went to another apartment, where they got a ride to Wesley Avenue, the report said.
Wells and the man were found walking down Andrew Johnson Highway. He complied with officer requests to stop and show his hands, but the other man "took off running," the report said.
The man sought by police allegedly threw the gun into a ditch on Fairgrounds Circle.
Wells was also charged with weapons law violations, a report said.
Wells was scheduled to appear today in General Sessions Court.
