Of Command

About 30 members of the USS Greeneville crew were part of halftime festivities at the NFL Pro Bowl football game on Sunday at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. As the crew marched onto the field during the “NFL Salutes The Military” tribute, members of the USS Greeneville, led by COB (chief of the boat) Marcus Hensley, at right, quickly unfurled the Town of Greeneville flag for the cameras. The USS Greeneville nuclear attack submarine is home-based at Pearl Harbor. The flag flies above the submarine at all times the USS Greeneville is surfaced.

PEARL HARBOR, HAWAII -- A time-honored change of command ceremony was held aboard the Los Angeles-class submarine USS Greeneville (SSN 772) at the submarine piers at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam last Friday.

Greeneville Commanding Officer Cmdr. Anthony Carullo was relieved by Cmdr. Martin Muckian.

Guest speaker Capt. Stanley Robertson praised Carullo for his exceptional performance while commanding Greeneville as well as commending the crew on their accomplishments under Carullo's leadership.

"Cmdr. Carullo, congratulations on the exceptional performance throughout your tour as commanding officer of USS Greeneville. You and your crew consistently completed all tasking with outstanding results," Robertson said.

"These accomplishments are a testament to the leadership, initiative and professionalism of both you and your crew."

In reply, Carullo stated that the majority of the submarine's success during his time as commanding officer could be attributed to the crew and their hard work.

"Being a Greeneville Sailor takes special drive and determination," he said.

"Submarining is a team sport, and it takes a well-trained and proficient team to conduct many of the complex and highly technical evolutions on board."

Following his remarks, Carullo was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his exceptional performance as commanding officer from November 2009-February 2012.

As Muckian assumed command of the USS Greeneville, he addressed the crew about the future.

"To the men of the Greeneville, you have impressed me with not only your performance but in the way you take care of each other as true shipmates," Muckian said.

"I am honored to join this crew as your captain and look forward to sailing with you."

Carullo's personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (three awards) and Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards).

He will report for duty to the office of the Chief of Naval Operations N87 Submarine Warfare Division.
