A Greeneville man is out about $31,000 after the money was stolen Tuesday afternoon from his house in the 600 block of East Barton Ridge Road, police Officer Gina Holt said in a report.
The missing money includes $30,000 in cash kept in an envelope in a kitchen drawer.
A plastic jug on a kitchen counter that contained about $1,000 in quarters was also taken, the report said.
The house was unlocked at the time of the theft, which the victim said occurred between 12:30 p.m. and 2:10 p.m. Tuesday.
The victim identified a man who had been working at the house last week as a possible suspect.
A neighbor saw an unfamiliar "pink over gray" Nissan or Honda sedan with "orange and red flames" on the side parked at the victim's house between noon and 1 p.m., the report said.
The suspect may have known where the money was kept and that the victim leaves his door unlocked when he goes to lunch, the report said.
Police were unable to locate the suspect Tuesday at his Greeneville address.
The victim was advised "to lock his doors and keep money in a safe if he was going to have large amounts at home," the report said.
