It will be early afternoon, at best, before West Main Street (Newport Highway) will reopen to traffic following a water line break that washed out a sizable portion of the roadway just after 2 a.m. today.
Greeneville Water Department Foreman William Ross said this morning that repairs have been ongoing since about 3 a.m. at the site, near Forest Street and Reaves Lane on the section of West Main known most commonly as the Newport Highway.
Ross said he hoped to see water outages in the immediate area restored before noon.
Some areas may experience low water pressure, he said.
A 40-foot-by-24-foot section of the road will have to be repaved, likely leaving the road closed near West Main Recycling until approximately 2 p.m., he said.
