After a Thanksgiving Day filled with turkey dinners and good fellowship, Greene Countians will observe “Black Friday.”
Black Friday is typically recognized as the busiest shopping day of the year, marked by many stores’ opening their doors early in the wee hours of the morning to offer bargains to energetic Christmas shoppers.
How did Black Friday get it’s name?
While the name started in Philadelphia to describe heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic on the day after Thanksgiving about 60 years ago, the name now “indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or are ‘in the black,’” according to Wikipedia.com.
“Cyber Monday” refers to the Monday that immediately follows Black Friday. Cyber Monday is a heavy online shopping day, with many online retailers’ offering bargains to Internet users.
