A young man out running about 6:30 p.m. Sunday on Pates Hill Road successfully defended himself against three unknown assailants, sheriff's Deputy Jon Caudill said in a report.
The 18-year-old told deputies that as he was running, a Ford F250 pickup truck containing three men pulled up next to him and started calling him names.
The men were drinking beer and appeared to be drunk, the report said.
One man in the bed of the truck jumped out and started pushing the victim and then punched him in the face, the report said.
"They began fighting, both of them punching and wrestling and (the victim) got the best of the drunk stranger that started the assault," the report said.
As the victim landed punches, "The drunk male quit and jumped back into the Ford truck and they took off toward the Cocke County line," the report said.
The incident remains under investigation.
