COSBY - Another hard-fought, tough District 2-A/AA battle on the pitch happened when Chuckey-Doak and Cosby High School met on Tuesday night.
A rematch from last year's Region 1-A/AA tournament quarterfinal round, Cosby was able to score a goal in each half for a 2-0 victory over the Lady Knights. Cosby won last year's postseason battle by a 3-1 score in comeback fashion.
The two teams battled to a stalemate until the 30 minute mark of the first half when Cosby sophomore Madison Norris was able to get the Lady Eagles (4-2-1) on the board. Norris came free on the inside and scored on a rebound. Chuckey-Doak senior keeper Ashley Anderson had saved a shot by Cosby senior Lexi Lowery, but the ball came free and Norris put it in the back of the net.
Although Cosby had seized momentum with the late first half goal, Chuckey-Doak went on the offensive in the second half. The Lady Knights lived on the Cosby end of the field for much of the second half, but came up empty handed.
Chuckey-Doak had one shot hit off the post and another sail just over the crossbar on a pair of near-misses. Cosby keeper Cyara Williams also came up with a handful of saves in the second half.
After staving off a Chuckey-Doak offensive attack, Cosby senior Lexi Lowery got a breakaway opportunity and capitalized as she went the distance of the field and fired the shot past Anderson to give the Lady Eagles a two-goal lead.
C-D was led by a strong performance in goal from Anderson while freshman Mauren Pickle had a quality performance off the bench, Coach Anna Ricker said.
Chuckey-Doak (5-2, 2-1) returns to district play on Thursday by hosting Cumberland Gap High School.
