South Greene's softball team put away old rival West Greene 13-3 on a windy day at the Rebels' home park Tuesday, ending the game early with a seven-run sixth inning that stopped the affair due to the 10-run rule.
The Lady Rebels collected four hits, three walks and the Buffs made two errors that resulted in the big seven-run inning in the sixth that broke open a tight 6-3 contest.
Jessica Gallihar was the winning pitcher, scattering six hits while striking out six. She worked out of several jams, especially in the fifth when the Buffs loaded the bases with no outs and managed only one run.
Macey Haire provided the big stick for South Greene, cracking a two-run homer in the first, then getting two hits in two trips to the plate in the sixth, one which was a two-run rip to right. Gallihar also had three hits in the game. Nadalyn Sauceman knocked in three runs with two safe blows, and Kylie Renner added a pair of base knocks.
The Buffs struck first with two runs in the first. A one-out walk to Logan Long and a single by Kristen Johnson was followed by a two-run double by Rachel Hensley down the left field line.
South Greene got those runs back plus more in the bottom of the first. Sauceman had an RBI hit, Haire crushed the two-run homer and Logan Dunn knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Rebels made it 6-2 with two runs in the second. Peyton Williams walked and Gallihar singled, then Sauceman brought both home with a single up the middle..
That 6-2 score stood up until the fifth as both pitchers settled. In that inning, things looked good for the Buffs when Melissa Kinser singled, Yesenia Flores walked and Long brought in a run with a double to right. A walk to Johnson loaded the sacks, still with nobody out. But Gallihar got a force out at the plate, then struck out two straight batters to end the big threat.
That brought on the decisive sixth when the Rebs had their big inning.
Both teams are back in action on Thursday. West Greene is home to Chuckey-Doak, while the Rebels will be at home to Cumberland Gap.
