Fredrik Muren scored the tying goal in the 71st minute to lift Tusculum College to a 1-1 draw with Carson-Newman College in a South Atlantic Conference men's soccer match Wednesday evening.
Muren's goal with 19:52 left salvaged the deadlock for the Pioneers (4-3-2, 1-2-1 SAC) against the Eagles (4-3-1, 2-1-1 SAC) after Ryan Odum had given Carson-Newman a 1-0 lead exactly 18 minutes earlier.
The teams combined for 36 shots in the match, including 10 in overtime. Carson-Newman finished with a 22-14 edge in the shot column, but put just five of their attempts on the Tusculum net. The Pioneers were credited with three shots on goal against the Eagles.
After a scoreless first half, Odum recorded the first goal of the match when his shot from close range went over the head of Pioneer keeper Andy Goellner for a 1-0 Carson-Newman lead.
The lead held until Muren's equalizer at 70:08 from inside the box, and the sides went to overtime in a 1-1 tie. The Eagles took seven shots over the 20 extra minutes, including six in the second overtime alone, but Goellner was called upon to make just one save.
Goellner finished the match with four saves, while Carson-Newman keeper Rumwald Le Gueval made a pair of saves.
The Pioneers will return to action Saturday night at 7 p.m. when they host Bethel University at Pioneer Park as part of the campus' Homecoming festivities.
