LADY DEVILS EDGE COCKE COUNTY

Madison Grubbs nailed a 3-point bucket from the left wing with 10 seconds left in the game and lifted the Greeneville High Lady Devils to a thrilling 39-38 win over Cocke County Tuesday morning in the consolation bracket finals at the Ladies' Classic.

The Devils had trailed most of the game until Madison Shipley hit a bucket from inside the lane with two minutes left to put her team up 36-35. A basket from Mika Wester seconds later, followed by a free throw by Wester with 32 seconds to go, had Cocke County back up 38-36.

But Grubbs found the range on the shot from the perimeter. Cocke County had a chance to score in the final ticks on the clock but missed a shot.

Shipley had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds to pace Greeneville (8-6). Wester led Cocke County (8-8) with 15 points and five rebounds.

Cocke County led 21-10 at halftime but the Devils stormed back after intermission.

EAGLETTES WIN IN OT

The tournament's first overtime game saw two mid-state powers battle from start to finish with Shelbyville Central pulling out a 64-58 victory over Wilson Central.

Both teams displayed power in the post game, with Shelbyville's Jameka Braden leading her team with 25 points and eight rebounds. To'Nesha Allison scored 16 points with seven rebounds.

Wilson Central's Kendall Spray swished in six 3-pointers on her way to 22 points and dished out five assists, while post Dominique St. Louis had 20 points.

A layup by St. Louis with 16 seconds left tied the score at 58-58 and Shelbyville had two shots to win in regulation but missed. The game was tight from the outset, with the score tied eight times and there were seven lead changes in the contest.

Shelbyville (10-7) outscored the Wildcats (9-4) 6-0 in the extra frame.

HOLY NAME TAKES FIFTH OVER SGHS

Holy Name of Ohio captured the fifth place award for the 2013 Ladies' Classic, beating South Greene 66-54.

The Lady Rebels never could seem to get into a flow on offense, and the Green Wave (7-3) showed good scoring balance, led by Erica Davis with 15. Kim Cook posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Rachel Kucharczyk and Jackie Corrigan each scored 11.

South Greene (14-5) got 15 points from Cheyenne Upton and 13 from Alora Ricker. Peyton Williams had nine points and nine rebounds.

Holy Name began to take charge in the second quarter after the Rebels led 14-13 at the first break. The Wave had the lead 29-23 at intermission, then outscored South Greene 18-9 in the third period to lengthen their advantage to 47-32. The Rebs got to within eight points in the fourth but could not catch up.

GRAINGER TAKES THIRD

The Grainger High School Lady Grizzlies finished third in the Landair Ladies' Classic, defeating Grace Christian Academy 60-40.

Grainger (13-3) was led by Blake Lamb with 20 points and Allison Hodge with 19, and both players had five rebounds.

Grace Christian (9-5) was paced by Sydney Duggins with 19 points and seven rebounds.

Grainger spotted Grace a 15-11 first quarter advantage, then took off to capture a 21-19 halftime lead. The Grizzlies owned the second half, outscoring the Lady Rams 39-21 to move away to victory.

MORRISTOWN WEST, THE CHAMPS

Morristown West's Lady Trojans are the champions of the 2013 Landair Ladies Classic as they downed Archer's Tigers of Lawrenceville, Ga., 61-51 in the finals before a good and vocal crowd at Greeneville's Hal Henard Gymnasium.

West, after having to settle for second place in last year's holiday event, won it all this year behind the guard play of Abbe Craine (17 points, four assists) and Jenna Potts (17 points, four 3-pointers), and the post work of tourney MVP Jecca Simerly, who posted a double-double on the night with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Trojans (14-2) trailed by a single point (14-13) after one quarter, but jumped into a 27-22 halftime lead and never trailed again. A 17-point lead was cut to six in the fourth quarter as Archer made a run, but West was able to withstand the rally and take home the championship trophy.

Archer lost for the first time this year after 13 straight wins. The tall and talented Tigers were led by Madison Newby with 16 points and Amber Skidgel with 15. Autumn Newby had 15 rebounds.
