A Freshman At GHS

Greeneville native Jessica Sallah had the opportunity to travel to Germany in late July to train and play with different German soccer clubs and coaches.

Sallah plays on the Tennessee Olympic Development Team which is run by Tennessee Soccer and is coached by Lee Smith, the Tennessee Director of Coaching.

Included in their eight-day trip were games against club teams from the Frankfurt Area.

In 1977, the Olympic Development Program was introduced to identify a pool of players, from which a National Team would be selected. This would begin at the state level, advancing regionally and finally to the national level.

Tennessee Soccer seeks a process to identify and train the best players, so they may qualify for Tennessee Soccer, Region III, and U.S. National Team programs.

Tennessee Soccer seeks to enhance the development of each player, guided by high-level licensed coaches. It is the state's goal to give exposure to each player, and to assist him/her in obtaining college scholarship opportunities.

While in Germany the team was trained by coaches from Eintracht Frankfurt e.V. and FFC Frankfurt; both clubs that are based in Frankfurt and play in the top German leagues.

Throughout the week the girls had the opportunity to play different teams from the two Frankfurt area clubs and won two of the three games.

While in the Frankfurt area, where the normal July temperatures in the upper 70's, the girls experienced more Tennessee-like weather with temperatures in the 90s, giving the Tennessee Girls a definite advantage with their ability to handle the game time heat and humidity.

The girls had opportunities to shop, sight-see and dine in both Frankfurt and Wurzburg, in between their daily soccer activities. One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity to attend a professional preseason game between Mainz and West Ham United outside of Frankfurt.

Sallah has played for the Greeneville Galaxy Soccer club (coached by Walter Graham), although she currently plays with the Knoxville Futbal Club (coached by Fields Brown).

This fall, Sallah will be a freshman at Greeneville High School and will play on the Lady Devil soccer team.

She has been selected to play on the Tennessee Olympic Development team for the past two years. During the year, Sallah travels throughout the Southeastern United States to train and play matches against other club and state ODP teams.

Jessica is the daughter of Scott and Michelle Sallah of Greeneville.
