West Greene Girls, Greeneville Boys Win Subsectional Track Titles

Originally published: 2013-05-08 15:29:18

GREENEVILLE - The Greeneville boys and the West Greene girls claimed team championships at the TSSAA Class A-AA track and field North-East Subsectional meet held at Greeneville Middle School Tuesday afternoon.

The Devils collected 152.75 points to more than double the total of runner-up Elizabethton. University High placed third on the boys' side, followed by West Greene and Sullivan East.

The Lady Buffaloes finished with 126 points to sit atop the girls' leaderboard, followed by Gatlinburg-Pittman (93), Greeneville (91), Elizabethton and University High.

The top four finishers in each event advanced to next Tuesday's East Sectional meet at CAK, where state championship berths will be on the line.

Also, there will be four sectional wild card spots handed out in each event once all the subsectional meets are finished.

The Greeneville boys were led by a dominating performance in the distance events.

Senior Simeon Roberts - the defending state champion in the 800 meters - won both that event and the 1600 meters Tuesday.

Wesley Pectol crossed the line first in the 3200 meters. Pectol and Zach Weaver came in third and fourth, respectively, in the 1600 meters behind Roberts.

The Devils' 4x800 meter relay team of Roberts, Pectol, Weaver and Wes King was also victorious. They, too, are defending state champions in that event.

"Our distance people were tough today," Greeneville head coach Bill Brimer said. "That's our solid base. We can always rely on them."

"Due to the weather and several other factors, Simeon didn't run as fast as he is capable of. Last week at the Times-News Relays, he ran a time faster than his state championship time from a year ago."

Greeneville won two other boys' relays as well: the 4x100 with Quan Wilson, Tristan Irvin, Desmond Dabbs and Mikhail Anderson, and the 4x200 with Brandon Hall, Jared Bond, Trey Clark and Marshall Brown.

"Those sprint relays were really big for us," Brimer said. "The times we ran are comprable to what we've been running, but we beat some teams that we haven't so far this year. We just didn't make any glaring mistakes today."

Junior Quan Wilson won the boys' 110 meter hurdles to round out the Devils' group of first-place finishers.

The West Greene girls were led by the muli-win effort of junior Cheyenne Upton, who took the 100 and 300 meter hurdles titles.

Charlotte Murphy won the high jump and Curiesha Ford the shot put. Murphy was second in the shot put after having only thrown in one or two meets the entire season.

"I couldn't be more pleased with or day," said West Greene coach Joe Case, whose team won the subsectional girls' title for the second consecutive year.

"We had a couple of events that we didn't score as big as we would have liked, but we also had some people step up in other ones.

Macy Parham came in runner-up in the 800 meters.

The West Greene combinatoin of Upton, Katie Brown, Parham won the 4x800 relay, while the 4x100 team came in runner-up.

Greeneville's Maddison Melchionna won the girls' 800 and 1600 meter events, while Hannah Rhodes claimed the girls' 3200 meters. The Lady Devils' 4x100 meter team of Madison Smith, Mendy Neas, Kiya Wilson, and Alex Crutcher was also victorious.

For West Greene no the boys' side, sophomore Jonathan Padgett sprinted his way to the 100 meter title.
