They ruined the downtown by building a federal court house down in a historical district. What an eye sore that is. What a mistake that was. Keep on goofing up the downtown and it will no longer be historical. My opinion..that’s all.

I couldn’t help but respond to this comment - the “they” in this situation is the Federal Government. Many people locally were opposed to and fought the building of this courthouse in it’s present location and the chosen design for said building. Not only were homes torn down, but the design was supposed to reflect the architecture of the local district. Unfortunately, many of the agencies that are in place to protect the integrity of a historic district also have no authority to do much more than make suggestions or comments.

I disagree with the thoughts on the Federal Courthouse or progress. One has to admit that the Federal Courthouse it is a good looking building both inside and out. I think it is a reminder on how far behind we are and that we need to catch up, which is a good thing. I keep seeing posts about ruining the historic district of downtown, which really isn’t that much. You have to admit that there are quite a few run down and abandoned/ugly properties in downtown…at least quite a few more than there are historic propoerties. Don’t make it sound like progress is bad or that some how someone is building on top of the Andrew Johnson Homestead or something like that…..that’s just simply not the case.

Oh please..come on..That building is totally ugly. It sure does represent the other federal buildings in this country..Drabby. It had no place in that part of town if it was to be built here.
That thing sure sets well with all the historical buildings down there and that is being sarcastic.
They. whom who what’s it matter. It’s there but that does not mean everyone likes it. What a joke it made the down town.

Ok….I’m backing up. I have to agree with you now. I think the Federal Courthouse should have been built to look like the liquor store across the way or maybe even the empty lot across the street…better yet, the trashed (but historic) houses and buildings out back. Regardless, the Federal Government did accomplish their purpose . . . . we all know they are there.

Glad your into the drab….because that’s exactly what it is. We disagree about it. That’s ok because everyone has agreements and disagreements. Even though you think the building is nice in my opinion it had no place down town.

Pardon me for offering the thoughts of an outsider… but I just can’t resist.
My husband and I are looking for a place to relocate/retire from our hectic corporate lives, open a small business and settle in a historic, not too big, not too small, friendly, caring, and forward thinking town with potential. After visiting dozens of towns in the SE over many months, we have decided that Greeneville is at the top of our list.
You DO have the makings of a very beautiful downtown that could draw thousands of visitors; the old buildings, the history, the churches… all the ingredients are there; no town is without its shabby stuff, thats just opportunity in disguise. We walked from one end to the other and loved it, but we do have a few reservations about settling here and opening a business downtown. The blog is a terrific way to get the good ideas out, construct a vision and hammer out a plan of action that can be implemented.
Like it or not, parking is essential so I hope you resolve that soon, even if people have to walk a little way to get to Main St. After business hours gathering spots seemed missing last time we were there and festivals of every kind will hopefully be considered. and the Capitol Theatre… please make it something special, its a real gem. We are hoping you have a very strong merchants association because when people of like minds band together, miracles can be accomplished.
In closing, we feel if we could move sometime this year or early next, we might be getting into Greeneville on the ground floor of its rennaissance… , we think you are a perfect place to relocate and I sure many other do as well. Our very best wishes for a successful Iris Festival and a prosporous spring and summer… hope to visit again soon.
