KNOXVILLE - Thirty-six thousand people signed a petition mid-season that called for Tennessee men's basketball coach Cuonzo Martin to be gone and replaced by Bruce Pearl.

Tuesday afternoon, those fans got half their wish.

Martin agreed in principle to become the next head coach at California. The move was confirmed when Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart held an afternoon press conference at Thompson-Boling Arena.

"(Cuonzo) was a terrific role model for our student athletes - specifically our men's basketball players," Hart started. "I know I, and everybody connected with our athletics department at the University, wish him nothing but success at Cal."
