Margaret Lyons Rogan

Published: 08/07/2004

ROGERSVILLE - Margaret Lyons Rogan, 86, a lifelong resident of Rogersville, died Saturday at Wellmont Hawkins County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Rogan was a member of Rogersville Presbyterian Church.

She received a degree in home economics from the University of Tennessee, where she was a member of Tri-Delta sorority.

Most of her life was spent in making a home for her family.

Mrs. Rogan was born Dec. 24, 1917, at the Lyons family home at 400 McKinney Ave. The home, which was built by her grandfather in 1900, was where she grew up.

Later this home became the Tom Rogan family home. Through the years, Mrs. Rogan maintained a special interest in the New Providence Presbyterian Church and the restoration of the Maxwell Academy, located adjacent to the church.

She was also interested in preservation of the many historical buildings and sites of Rogersville and in the Rogersville Historical Society.

Mrs. Rogan was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Rogan, her husband of 59 years, a Rogersville attorney who died in 2001.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law: Mary Margaret and John Eberly of Signal Mountain and Alice Rogan of Nashville; a son: Dr. Frederick Heiskell Rogan II of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a sister: Mrs. R.D. Carson of Roanoke, Va.; two sisters-in-law: Mrs. Arthur Lyons of Knoxville and Mrs. William Phipps of Rogersville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was a daughter of the late Mary Susan "Mamie" (Spears) and Albert Lyons Sr., and was preceded in death by a sister: Julia Lyons Crews; and two brothers: Arthur Lyons and Albert Lyons Jr.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at Broome Funeral Home, 513 E. Main St. in Rogersville.

A graveside service will follow in McKinney Cemetery. Dr. David L. Hale will officiate,

Memorial contributions may be made to New Providence Presbyterian Church, Surgoinsville, TN 37873, or Rogersville Presbyterian Church, 309 W. Kyle St., Rogersville, TN 37857.
