Carl E. Lowery, 87, of the Houston Valley Road, died Thursday morning at his home.

Mr. Lowery was a farmer.

He was a veteran of World War II.

"He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather," his family noted.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years: Flora Shipley Lowery; eight children and their spouses: Lisa and Hank Gregg of Greeneville, Sherry Lowery of the home, Barbara and Dwight Sams and Betty and Preston Jones, all of Marshall, N.C., Linda Lethco, Charles and Brenda Lowery, Terry Lowery, and Rocky Lowery, all of Greeneville; nine grandchildren and their spouses: Rhonda and Curtis Wyatt, Carla and Charles Brown, Michael Cook, Shanna Waddell, Jessica Sanders, August Long, Danielle Gregg, Jason Eisenhour, and Tommy Shelton; 12 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Hazel Thompson, Blanche Lowery and Margie Lowery, all of Greeneville; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Mamie Lowery, Nina Foulks, Etta Shipley, Hazel and Berry Tarleton, Roy "Tom" Shipley, and Nelle Shipley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a son of the late Marion and Nola Payne Lowery and was preceded in death by twin sons: Billy Joe Lowery and Bobby Gene Lowery; four brothers: Glen Lowery, Ray Lowery, Howard Lowery, and Arnold Lowery; two sisters: Anna Mae Hensley and Dorthy Lowery; and one half-sister: Zonia Wilhoit.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6- 8 p.m. today at Rose Hill Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday morning in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Jimmy Fillers will officiate.

Interment will follow in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens. A military graveside service will be conducted by the Greene County Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be David Stills, Donald Dean Miller, Bryan Presley, Michael Cook, Bobby Patrick, Terry Jones, Mitch Westmoreland, and Jackie Lowery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Gaye Battle and Ron Pairgin of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Cecil Crum, Johnny Shipley, Herman Presley, Melissa Jones, Eb Darnell, Earl Fox, and the nurses and staff of Smoky Mountain Hospice.
