J.D. Ooten, 89, of North Mohawk Road, Mohawk, died Monday at Johnson City Medical Center, due to injuries received in a tractor accident on Wednesday, May 7.
Mr. Ooten was a farmer.
He was of the Methodist tradition of faith.
Mr. Ooten was a son of the late Jessie and Sally Campbell Wooten and was the widower of Myrtle Lee Shipley Ooten, his wife of 64 years who died July 25, 2005.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law: David and Phyllis Ooten of Mohawk and Robert and Brenda Ooten of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law: Joyce and Buddy Jackson of Tallahassee, Fla.; his grandchildren and their spouses: R. Lee and Mark Cotter of Salt Lake City, Utah, Chris and Brooke Ooten of New York, N.Y., Amy and Dr. Grant Garrigues of Durham, N.C., Lauren and Sam Yeary of Morristown, and Dr. Melissa Ooten of Richmond, Va.; his great-grandchildren: Andrew Cotter, Matthew Cotter, Luke Cotter, and Harrison Ooten; one sister: Verna Mae Rednour of Mohawk; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend and co-worker: Tony Lawson.
He had a special friend and companion, his faithful dog, "Farmer."
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Lloyd Wooten, Paul Wooten, and Kenneth Ooten.
The family will receive friends 3-7 p.m. Friday at Kiser Funeral Home.
The funeral service will follow visitation at 7 o'clock in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Howard Shipley will officiate.
A committal service will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning in Mohawk Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at 9:45 in the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be members of the family.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John Shaw and farmers in the local area.
