Bessie Mae Gudger

Died: Nov. 23, 2008

Bessie Mae Charles Gudger, 96, of Greeneville, died Sunday at her home.

Mrs. Gudger was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, the Jolly Workers Club and the Negro Women's Civic Club.

She retired from the Greeneville City School System and the Foster Grandparent Program.

Mrs. Gudger was the widow of Harry Clinton Gudger.

Survivors include a daughter: Betty Brownlow of El Paso, Texas; three sons and two daughters-in-law: Norman and Janice Gudger of Greeneville, William and Patricia Gudger of Rutledge, and James Gudger of Greeneville; a son-in-law: Mark Barner; a sister-in-law: Beulah Charles; 14 grandchildren, including William Barner and Perrish Gudger, both of whom she raised; 19 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and a "host of loving neighbors and community friends"; and her caregiver: Misty Jones.

She was preceded in death by a daughter: Barbara Jean Barner; and a granddaughter: Jamesina Gudger.

The family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. Wednesday at Friendship Baptist Church.

The funeral service will follow visitation at 2 o'clock at the church with interment in Wesley Heights Cemetery. The Rev. Cecil C. Mills Jr. will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Mark Barner, Perrish H. Gudger, William Barner, William Gudger, Allen Barner, and Josh Barner.

Jeffers Funeral & Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
