John Douglas Doty

Died: June 7, 2009

John Douglas Doty, 62, of Doty Chapel Road, Afton, died Sunday evening at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Mr. Doty retired from A&L Construction Company at Tennessee Eastman.

He was a member of Doty's Chapel United Methodist Church and attended Cross Anchor Presbyterian Church.

His family stated, "He enjoyed working on the family farm, the historic Doty farm in Northern Greene County, where he was born and raised. He was known as a master craftsman, building and repairing anything and everything including houses, toy chests and antique cars. Most of all he enjoyed being 'Poppy' to his grandchildren."

Survivors include his wife: Barbara Doty; a son and daughter-in-law: Dr. John Douglas Doty II and his wife, Nicole, of Huntersville, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law: Margaret Anne and Kevin Forni of Nashville; a stepson: Scott Weems of Greeneville; a stepdaughter: Carmen Weems of Afton; four grandchildren: John Douglas "Jack" Doty III, Lily Weems, Cadence King and Mary Weems; a sister and brother-in-law: Nancy and Dr. A.L. Duckworth Jr. of Greeneville; his special aunts: Charlotte Doty of Afton, Ruby Shanks and her husband, Bill, of Surgoinsville, and Jessie Reeves of Rogersville; his mother-in-law: Mary Ruth Malone of Afton; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Freddie and Marlene Malone of Greeneville and Agnes and James Williamson of Dutton, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Carl Doty and Helen Doty Loyd.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning at Doty's Chapel UM Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Ronnie Duncan and the Rev. A.C. Cobble will officiate.

The body will be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be J.D. Lowe, Kevin Pierce, Doug Woolsey, Roger Woolsey, David Matthews, Jeff Weems, Donald Weems, Freddie Malone, Mike Starnes, and other close friends.
