Bill Mathes

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- William "Bill" Rowe Mathes, died Friday.

He was born Jan. 29, 1927, in Greeneville, Tenn. He was the widower of Becky Mathes, who died Nov. 3, 2004.

Mr. Mathes retired as a lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Army after 21 years. He was a decorated pilot and instructor, in addition to being a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his five children and their families: David W. Mathes, Nancy M. Newsom, Daniel R. Mathes, Sally A. Pepperman, and Katie M. Mathes; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Military honors will be conducted privately in Tennessee.

Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.
