George A. Matejka

Died: Sept. 14, 2012

George Albert Matejka, of Baileyton, died Friday, Sept. 14, at Takoma Regional Hospital.

Born April 23, 1925, he was formerly of Joliet, Ill.

He served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II and was a retired auto mechanic.

George was an avid gardener and fisherman.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Scott Long, and his beloved wife, Jacqueline Mae Matejka.

He is survived by a stepdaughter: Holly Petersen; eight stepgrandchildren: Kiersten (David) Whitehead, Shannon White, Brandon White, Seth (Crystal) White, Cody (Heather) White, Ethan Petersen, Rebecca (Stephen) Byers, and Scott (Nicole) Long; 21 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-great-grandchild.

The family noted that Mr. Matejka was more like a father and grandfather to the family. "He became a part of our lives more than 50 years ago."

Honoring his wishes, there was no formal service and his body was cremated.

A military graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens.
