ROGERSVILLE -- James "Andy" Spears Sr., age 79, of Rogersville, passed away Friday at Church Hill Life Care Center.

He was a member of Tunnel Hill Baptist Church.

Mr. Spears retired from the Mead Corp. after 43 years of service.

He was a veteran of the Virginia Army National Guard. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union.

He is survived by his wife: Wanda Spears of the home; three sons: J.F., Tony and David; a daughter: Joyce Gibson (Brian); his grandchildren: Shane Spears, Dillon Spears, Evan Spears, Donavan Spears, Marshall Spears, Haley Spears, Jessie Gibson, and Whitney Mowell; three great-grandchildren; his nephews: Ralph Spears, R.L. Jennings, and Junior Jennings; a niece: Teresa Spears; a brother: Benny Spears; two sisters: Allie Jennings and Audrey Salyers; and a host of distant relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Herbert and Effie Spears; a brother: Charles Spears; a sister-in-law: Margie Spears; two brothers-in-law: Tom Jennings and Dave Salyers; and a niece: Anita Whitaker.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Christian-Sells Funeral Home, Rogersville, with the services following at 8 p.m. The Rev. Glen Bradley will officiate.
